Shiozawa Toki
Bio
Shiozawa Toki (born Shiozawa Toyoji) was an elegant, cultured Japanese actress best known for her unique and eccentric comedic timing. She entered the film industry at the age of nineteen, successfully navigating Toho's second "New Face" program and debuting in 1950. She appeared constantly in comedies, war films, dramas, and sci-fi throughout the studio's Golden Age.
After the old studio contract system collapsed, she easily transitioned her energetic persona to television, where she became even more prolific. She was well known for frequently co-starring with close friend Hirata Akihiko in the 1970s TV series Rainbowman, where she played the recurring villain "Witch Iguana". In the 1980s, she achieved a new level of massive national popularity by making regular appearances on the hit variety game show Lion No Itadakimasu (1984), standing out amongst panelists by adopting immense, bizarrely shaped hairstyles and telling a string of eccentric jokes in an incredibly deadpan, elegant manner.
Shiozawa remained exceptionally active in the public eye despite battling severe health issues throughout the majority of her life. She suffered from and survived tongue cancer at the young age of thirty, breast cancer in 1985, another bout of breast cancer in 2004, and severe osteoporosis. She ultimately succumbed to stomach cancer in 2007, passing away at the age of seventy-nine.
